The short version
In chemical terms, beta-glucan is a polysaccharide: a long, linked chain of sugar molecules. It turns up naturally in the cell walls of mushrooms, in yeast and oats, and in a handful of bacteria. In skin science it is one of the more thoroughly studied natural compounds a formulator can reach for, backed by a research record that goes back decades.

Structure
What beta-glucan is, structurally
Beta-glucans are chains of glucose units joined by beta-glycosidic bonds. That particular bond is what sets them apart from the alpha-linked glucose chains in starch, and it is the reason the body treats the two so differently.
The chains aren’t uniform. They vary in two ways that matter:
Backbone and branching. Mushroom beta-glucans characteristically carry beta-(1→6) linked branches, whereas beta-glucan from sources like laminarin runs on a beta-(1→3) backbone that branches at a different carbon. These aren’t cosmetic distinctions — the molecule’s shape governs how it behaves.
Molecular weight. Beta-glucans span a broad molecular-weight range, and that weight shapes how the molecule meets the skin surface. Heavier fractions tend to build films and hold water up top; lighter ones behave differently.
Which is why “contains beta-glucan” on a label tells you only part of the story. What you actually get depends on the source and the processing — something we go into further on our ingredients page.
The evidence
What the research literature reports
Beta-glucan shows up in the peer-reviewed skin literature more reliably than most naturals sold in cosmetics. A 2023 review in Carbohydrate Polymers, looking at beta-glucan extracts as multifunctional skin-health ingredients, catalogued biological activities relevant to the skin — among them wound-healing, anti-wrinkle and antioxidant activity — alongside soothing behaviour and interaction with the immune system.
The Agaricus-specific work
Closer to home: researchers have examined Agaricus-derived beta-glucan under ultraviolet stress specifically.
A 2025 review in Food Science & Nutrition on beta-glucan’s properties and its potential in skin care pulled together two results worth noting. In the first, Agaricus blazei-derived beta-glucan was reported to ease UVB-induced damage in a HaCaT cell model — HaCaT being an immortalised human keratinocyte line used widely in skin research. In the second, using UVA-stressed human fibroblasts, Agaricus blazei beta-glucan showed anti-photoaging behaviour: intracellular antioxidant enzyme levels climbed, extracellular-matrix proteins such as collagen type I and elastin rose, and the activity of the matrix metalloproteinases MMP-1 and MMP-9 dropped.
That final point is worth unpacking, because it is the mechanistically interesting bit.
Why MMP-1 and MMP-9 matter
Matrix metalloproteinases are enzymes that dismantle the structural proteins of the skin’s extracellular matrix. MMP-1 goes after collagen; MMP-9 works on other matrix components. Ultraviolet light ramps up their activity, and over years that accelerated breakdown accounts for a good deal of what we call photoaging — the slackening and the textural change of sun-exposed skin.
A compound that dials down MMP activity under UV stress in a lab model is, at least in principle, working on the breakdown side of the ledger rather than only the building side.
In plain terms
All of the above comes out of cell-model research — lab studies on cultured cells, not clinical trials of a finished cosmetic on human volunteers.
That gap isn’t a technicality. Cell-model results establish plausibility and mechanism; they don’t prove that a finished cream on a real face does the same thing. Between a petri dish and a face lie formulation, concentration, stability, penetration and plain individual variation.
We find the research genuinely interesting, and it is part of why we work with Agaricus. What we won’t tell you is that it means a cream undoes sun damage — because that isn’t what the evidence says.
In a formula
What beta-glucan does reliably in a formula
Put the mechanistic research to one side, and beta-glucan still earns its keep for reasons that are far better established.
Water-holding. It binds and retains moisture well and lays down a light film at the surface that slows water loss. This is the most consistently reported and least disputed of its properties.
Soothing. It is linked to less visible redness and better comfort in sensitive or reactive skin, which is why it crops up so often in barrier-focused and post-procedure formulas.
Antioxidant activity. Documented across a number of reviews.
Barrier support. Work on mushroom mycelium-derived beta-glucans has centred on their part in propping up the skin’s own barrier, especially where skin is irritated, dehydrated or compromised.
For a Gulf audience none of this is trivial. Air conditioning pulls moisture from skin around the clock, hard water unsettles the barrier, and the sun is a year-round fact. An ingredient that holds water, quiets reactivity and shores up the barrier is answering the conditions people here actually live in — not a hypothetical one.
How it compares
Beta-glucan next to other hydrating ingredients
vs Hyaluronic acid
Both are humectants that hold a lot of water. Hyaluronic acid is the better-known of the two and usually the quicker to plump. Beta-glucan leans more toward film-forming and soothing, and reactive skin often takes to it more easily. They complement each other rather than compete — plenty of well-built formulas run both.
vs Glycerin
Glycerin is smaller, simpler, hugely effective and cheap. What beta-glucan adds on top is the soothing and antioxidant activity glycerin lacks. A formula with both isn’t doubling up.
vs Niacinamide
Different machinery altogether. Niacinamide is a vitamin B3 derivative with a broad, well-evidenced range of effects on how skin looks. Beta-glucan is a polysaccharide operating mainly through hydration, film formation and soothing. The practical upshot: beta-glucan replaces nothing in your routine. It is a supporting player that makes formulas more comfortable and more hydrating, with a research record hinting it may do a little more than that.

Who benefits most
- Skin that runs dehydrated or reactive. The hydrating, soothing profile is the main event here.
- Skin recovering from a compromised barrier — after over-exfoliation, harsh cleansing, hard water or environmental stress.
- Skin with heavy daily sun exposure. Never as a stand-in for sunscreen. Sunscreen is the intervention with the overwhelming evidence behind it for photoprotection; beta-glucan is a supporting antioxidant, not a shield. - Anyone whose skin flares with stronger actives. It tends to be gentle, and it layers happily alongside nearly everything else.

- Where it goes
- Beta-glucan shows up in serums, ampoules, moisturisers and masks. Put the thin textures on before the thick ones — serum ahead of cream.
- How often
- Twice a day is fine, morning and night. Unlike the stronger actives, there’s no tolerance to build up to first.
- Pairing
- It gets on well with hyaluronic acid, niacinamide, ceramides and peptides. It also works usefully next to retinoids and exfoliating acids as a buffering, comfort layer — handy when those actives leave skin feeling tight.
- Reading the label
- Look for the source named outright, a place in the ingredient list high enough to mean something, and a supporting cast that hangs together.
Questions
Frequently asked questions
Is mushroom beta-glucan better than oat beta-glucan?
They differ structurally in backbone and branching, which changes how they behave, but the head-to-head research isn’t deep enough to crown a winner for cosmetic use. Both are well tolerated, and both hydrate.
Can it stand in for sunscreen?
It can’t — nothing stands in for sunscreen. As an antioxidant, beta-glucan may lend some support to skin under UV stress, but real sun protection comes from your SPF and from staying out of the harsh midday sun.
Will it suit sensitive skin?
Usually, yes — it is one of the ingredients formulators reach for precisely because reactive skin tends to accept it. Even so, patch test anything new before you commit.
Does eating mushrooms achieve the same thing?
No. The beta-glucan you eat carries its own research literature, mostly around immune and metabolic function. That’s a separate question from topical use, and the two shouldn’t be run together.
How soon will I see a difference?
Hydration and comfort usually register within a few days to a couple of weeks. Any change you notice in texture tends to keep pace with the skin’s own renewal cycle — roughly four weeks. We set out realistic timelines in skincare results: when to expect them.
